Canada Day in St. Andrews-By-The-Sea

Not quite the background as in the photo above as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary.

Although Canada existed prior to 1867, within both the French and British empires, Canada Day is frequently referred to as "Canada's birthday." Canada Day is the anniversary of only one important national milestone on the way to the country's full independence, namely the joining on July 1, 1867, of the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada into a wider British federation of four provinces (the colony of Canada later being divided into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec). Canada became a "kingdom in its own right" within the British Empire named the Dominion of Canada. Although still a British dominion, Canada gained an increased level of political control and governance over its own affairs, although the British parliament and Cabinet still maintained political control over certain areas such as foreign affairs, national defence, and constitutional changes.

St. Andrews had a full slate of activities scheduled for the day and, although the weather was cold and rainy for most of the day, it did not deter a relatively large crowd from turning out to celebrate the event. The town only has a population of 1800 people and there were definitely more than that in attendance. Events ranged from a First Nation sunrise(?) celebration through concerts by the St. Mary's Church Band and the Caledonia Pipe Band of St. Johns, the Grand Parade and finally the cutting of a monster cake outside the Town Hall. Several historic homes were open for tours as well. Unfortunately, the weather was bad enough at around 2:00pm that they had to postpone the fireworks for the until tomorrow as they would have exploded above the fog over the harbor. Tomorrow should be better!

Another Foggy Day in St. Andrews Harbor

A rainy night with much slapping as the tide turned and water either rushed in or out of the two small entrances of the Harbor. The difference between high and low tide is around 22' so a huge amount of water flushes in and out four times a day. We awoke late to another foggy, cool (54 deg.F) day but with better prospects later as the weather forecast predicts 72 by 4pm and cloudshine for the rest of the day; we shall see. Maybe we will have the fireworks tonight!
